Case Study School Campus

Reliable communications to school campus

Background

Established in 1972, Palmer Trinity School is an Episcopal Middle and Upper School located in Palmetto Bay, an area south of downtown Miami, Florida. The school's curriculum is based on a program that stresses diversity, personal growth, inquiry-based thinking, and global citizenship. Palmer Trinity offers an extensive academic program, and students are encouraged to use their talents in the service of others with an emphasis on community service.

Recent renovations and improvements in campus planning prompted school officials to review their current radio communication system. The analog system in use at that time did not provideadequate coverage across the school's campus, performed poorly, and was unreliable.

Solutions

Administrators at Palmer Trinity School decided to switch to Hytera PD562 DMR portable radios. The radios provide enhanced performance and are equipped with features suited to both emergency situations, as well as day-to-operations.

The Hytera system includes patented pseudotrunking technology which maximizes the channel usage and allows multiple groups to talk at the same time.  The high capacity Li-Ion battery provides extended battery life which can last a full work day.

Features

One-Touch Text or Call
Supports One Touch features that include Preprogrammed Text Messages, Voice Calls and Supplementary Features.

Digital Encryption
To secure communications throughout the Hytera DMR system, the customer has a choice to use the standard Hytera encryption of up to 256 bits, DMR Association's algorithm ARC4 (40 bit).

Excellent Voice Transmission
Outstanding audio quality in loud environments and in boundary regions of the radio coverage, thus extending the range for clear communications.

Smaller, Sleeker, Lighter
The PD562 is 4.53 x 2.13 x 1.18 inches, weighing 9.9oz. The PD5 Series has dual- color injection molding.

Pseudo Trunk
The virtual trunking feature allocates a free timeslot for urgent communications. This effectively enhances frequency efficiency and allows you to communicate in a timely manner in emergency situations.

Battery Life
In digital mode, the PD5 Series can operate for approximately 16 hours under a duty cycle of  5-5-90.

Reliable & Rugged
Complies with MIL-STD-810 C/D/E/F/G standards and is IP54 (5: Generally protected against dust; 4: Protected against the effects of light rain or minor water splashes) ensuring outstanding performance.

Outcome

The PD562 radios are being used by all crisis management, administration, and security personnel within the school, creating a safer, more secure environment for both students and staff at Palmer
Trinity, as well as visitors. The school's initial purchase of 34 radios will be supplemented with 10 additional units within the year.

School administrators have implemented daily mandatory communication and utilization protocols, with all technology and facilities personnel using the radios as part of the daily operations. The PD562s are used for simulation purposes and real-life scenarios (i.e. fire drills and lockdowns).  All visitors to the school are reported via the radios, and school nurses are required to have a
radio with them at all times.
